As already mentioned, today’s technology is much the same as was in the eleventh
century - even the same specialised leather pastes are used. A book’s
conception begins with the artist’s imaginative idea and consideration of
exterior leather colour, type of fastener, type of body, internal contents and colour.
Each book is a unique creation and individually designed according to its
purpose and customer’s specification – the subject of contents can be reflected
within the book’s cover, if required. Once a design decision is made, the
interior book sheets are manually sewn with specialised tools. The book’s
edges are then cut. Bands are then embroidered onto the sheet edges, which
protect the book from dust and damage, as well as forming part of the book’s
décor. Prepared covers are put to the book’s body, which are then
typically covered in leather and secured by paste. Finally, stamps,
decorative accessories and fasteners are applied and inner leaves
are
fixed into place. And so begins a new soul, a new life, a new book.
From conception to completion, the average time taken is two weeks.
A note
from the artist: ‘A book should not merely be perceived as a
means to read from or write within. Primarily, a book is an object of art,
designed from considerable thought, created from passion, eluding energy, and
constructed to the highest quality. Each book is intended to reflect the
particular customer’s personality and preferences’.
